The staff, students, and parents of Carmel Middle School believe that the school's purpose is to provide an academic program offering all students the opportunity to become responsible, self-directed, life-long learners who are capable problem-solvers, communicators, decision makers, and productive citizens in today's changing society.

A Brief History
- Carmel Middle School (CMS) opened in the fall of 1964 as Carmel Junior High, with 900 students in grades 7, 8, & 9. It was the city's first junior high building.
- Sixth graders joined the school when Clay Junior High opened in 1974, relieving overcrowding problems. During the same year, the town of Carmel became a city and elected its first mayor.
- A major renovation occurred in the 1980s. After its completion in 1987, there were more classrooms, carpeted hallways, remodeled gyms, and a remodeled cafeteria with a stage.
- The school became accredited with the North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement.
- In 1995, freshman moved to the Carmel High School, and Carmel Junior High became Carmel Middle School with 6th, 7th, and 8th graders in the building.
- The building completed its second major renovation in the spring of 2007.
- CMS received the Indiana Department of Education's most recent "Four Star School" designation.
