Carmel Chess

The Carmel High School chess program has made history, capturing its fourth consecutive state championship at the SCI Team Finals tournament.

Carmel’s success extended across all of its entries, competing against the 26 top schools in the state, showcasing the depth of the program. The A Team claimed 1st place overall, while the B Team earned a strong 3rd-place finish. The C and D Teams also delivered impressive performances, placing 6th and 8th, respectively. Notably, every Carmel team competing at the tournament finished in the top 10.

The A Team demonstrated consistency and control throughout the competition, finishing with a score of 4.5 out of 5. Michael Pu and Sam Osters each posted perfect 5–0 individual records, playing a key role in securing the championship. The A Team roster included Timothy Lim, Shouryesh Chanda, Michael Pu, and Ethan Lee.

The B Team—Krishna Chouturi, Rodion Zuban, Siddhant Sinha, and Sam Osters—also stood out, finishing 3rd against strong statewide competition. C Team members Jayin Seghal, Vedant Nayak, Roger Chan, and Mukund Sagi placed 6th, while the D Team of Rishi Shah, Eddy Mou, Mikey Li, and Andrew Lee finished 8th.

The SCI Team Finals follow a multi-board team format, requiring coordination and consistency across all players. Carmel’s ability to place all four teams in the top 10 highlights both individual talent and the program's overall strength.

This historic achievement reflects the dedication of Carmel’s student competitors, the guidance of faculty sponsors Amy Hamon and Cynthia Henry, and the continued growth of the school’s chess program. With four consecutive state championships, Carmel has firmly established itself as a leading force in high school chess in Indiana.
