School Board Seeks Candidates for District Two Vacancy

Carmel Clay Schools announces a vacancy on the Board of Education for District Two following the retirement of Board Member Jennifer Nelson-Williams. Nelson-Williams was appointed in October 2021 to fill an unexpired term and was elected in 2022 to continue her service. The Board is grateful for her commitment to the Carmel Clay community.

With her retirement, the Board is now accepting applications from eligible residents of District Two to serve the remainder of the current term, which concludes on December 31, 2026.

According to Indiana Code 20-23-4-30, the remaining board members must appoint an individual to fill the vacancy within 30 days by a majority vote. The appointed member must reside within District Two of Carmel Clay Schools and meet the qualifications required of a regularly elected or appointed board member.

Who Can Apply

Applicants must:
• Be a registered voter in Hamilton County (confirm registration status)
• Be at least 21 years of age
• Have a legal settlement within Carmel Clay Schools District Two (confirm boundaries) for at least one year

• Cover letter addressed to the Board of Education and Superintendent
• Current résumé
• Responses to required questions

A background check will be completed for the selected appointee.

Understanding the Process

Indiana Code 20-23-4-30 requires vacancies to be filled by board appointment rather than special election. In accordance with Indiana’s Open Door Law, candidate interviews will be conducted in a public meeting to ensure transparency.

The appointed member will serve the remainder of the term ending December 31, 2026.

  • Flexibility in day and evening availability and the ability to devote 5+/- hours per week to conducting Carmel Clay Schools business as needed
  • A team player with a positive mindset and approach to problem-solving
  • Experience resolving complex issues
  • Solid knowledge of the Carmel Clay School District and a general background in public education
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong collaborative skills with the ability to put the community’s needs above personal preferences
  • Demonstrated knowledge and support of the districts’ guiding principles, mission, and vision
  • Familiarity with Indiana School Board Association guidance, resources, and training
