CHS Celebrates 52 National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists

National Merit Semifinalists

Carmel, IN – Carmel High School is proud to announce that 52 students have been named National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists in the 71st annual National Merit Scholarship Program. These academically talented seniors now have the opportunity to continue in the competition for nearly 7,000 National Merit Scholarships worth almost $26 million to be awarded in spring 2026.

This achievement reflects Carmel High School’s longstanding tradition of excellence and academic achievement. Over the past three years, Carmel High School has consistently ranked among the top schools in the nation for the number of National Merit Semifinalists, with 44 in 2025, 55 in 2024, and 56 in 2023.

While the recognition highlights the talent and dedication of the individual students, it also underscores the commitment of Carmel’s educators, families, and community in supporting academic success.

“We are so proud of our 52 National Merit Semifinalists,” said Carmel High School Principal, Dr. Tim Phares. “This recognition reflects their hard work and perseverance, as well as the support of our teachers and families. At Carmel High School, we’re committed to helping every student grow and succeed, and this honor is one of the many ways our students continue to make us proud.”

The National Merit Scholarship Program, established in 1955, is one of the most prestigious academic competitions in the United States. More than 1.5 million students enter annually by taking the PSAT/NMSQT. Of those, approximately 16,000 are named Semifinalists, representing the top 1% of high school seniors nationwide.

About 95 percent of Semifinalists are expected to advance to Finalist standing, and roughly half of those will go on to earn a National Merit Scholarship and the distinction of Merit Scholar®.
