Following 19 years working with Carmel Clay Schools and nearly 40 years as an educator, Principal Dr. Tom Harmas is retiring effective at the end of the 2021-2022 school year. Dr. Harmas has been a dedicated leader, and we are thankful for his vision and commitment to excellence at Carmel High School and across the district.
A graduate of Warren Central High School, Dr. Harmas began his career as a social studies teacher and coach at Indian Creek High School. Following five years as the principal of Mt. Vernon Middle School, Dr. Harmas was tasked with opening the then-brand-new Creekside Middle School on the growing west side of Carmel. His leadership and talent helped cement the continued excellence celebrated at Creekside today.
“When I came to CCS, Creekside Middle School was just a dream,” reflected Dr. Harmas. “Over the years, we continued to move forward while doubling in student and staff populations. We never lost sight of our vision to always do what was best for our students.”
With a return to his high school roots in 2017, Dr. Harmas embraced the continued community support and supportive environment at CHS. “This school is a special place where teachers care about students, and students come ready to be challenged and continually want to reach their potential and beyond,” remarked Dr. Harmas.
He was previously named Middle School Principal of the Year and in 2020 was awarded the Indiana Association of School Principals High School Principal of the Year.
Dr. Beresford shared, “We appreciate Dr. Harmas’ dedication and service to the students, staff, and community of Carmel Clay Schools. His leadership at Creekside Middle School and Carmel High School has always been student-focused with high expectations for academic excellence. Leading the largest high school in Indiana has its challenges and Dr. Harmas met those challenges by supporting his staff, engaging parents, and interacting with students. I will always remember him talking with students in the hallways or at a Friday night football or basketball game leading the Roller Coaster cheer with the Hounds’ student section. We will miss Dr. Harmas and wish him the best in his next adventure.”
