Carmel Clay Schools is committed to ensuring our students have access to high-quality programming that meets the needs of all students. To do this, we engage in a regular cycle of continuous improvement for each programmatic area.

During the 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 school years, Carmel Clay Schools conducted a Mathematics program evaluation and materials selection process for grades K-12. We would like to provide an opportunity for parents and guardians to view the selected materials. Materials will be on display for review, along with a feedback form that may be submitted.

Understanding the Program Evaluation Cycle

  • Program Evaluation: Review research, examine current instructional practices, analyze data, and formulate program recommendations
  • Curriculum Development: Prioritize Indiana Academic Standards, develop curriculum maps, design assessments
  • Materials Selection: Develop criteria based on program evaluation recommendations, review and select materials
  • Curriculum & Materials Alignment: Identify how materials and curriculum work in conjunction to meet learning objectives
  • Program Implementation: Teachers instruct using curriculum maps, materials, and recommended instructional practices

Math Materials - Frequently Asked Questions

How will the new math materials differ from previous math programs?

The main difference between new math programs of today as compared to programs of the past is a greater emphasis on problem-solving. Research has shown that students gain a deeper command of mathematics when they can interact with the conceptual side of mathematics. Simply put, students will spend time learning the why behind mathematics, rather than solely memorizing processes. Traditional mathematical foundations will still be present, with an added emphasis on problem-solving and real-world application.

How will I be able to interact with the materials as a parent to support my student?

The new math programs will integrate nicely with our student management system known as Canvas. Parents may view the materials via their students' Canvas course and/or through a Canvas Parent Observer account. At-home support features are included in the new programs and can be utilized for additional reinforcement in the home environment. Additional information on the home/school connection will be provided at the beginning of next school year by your child's classroom teacher.

Are the materials aligned with best practices?

The new math materials selected for grades K-8, along with Algebra I, Algebra II and Geometry have gained a four-star rating with the Keep Indiana Learning organization, along with an exemplary rating from the national review panel known as EdReports. More importantly, the materials chosen align directly to the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics research findings on the Eight Effective Teaching Practices for Mathematics. The chosen materials are aligned to the Indiana Academic Standards for Mathematics and have been vetted by local educators.
