Work-Based Learning Provides Valuable Skills

Reynolds

The Carmel High School Work-Based Learning (WBL) experience connects students with a local business to provide meaningful and authentic career-related experiences. The school, student, and workplace mentor create a training plan to guide the student’s WBL experience. Through the experience, a student will develop specific career-related skills, as well as a variety of employability skills, necessary for success in today’s workforce.

Cole Vreeman

Carmel High School student, Cole Vreeman, is working at Reynolds Farm Equipment as an automotive services intern. He has gained both invaluable industry experience, as well as technical skills. To be eligible for WBL, Cole is enrolled in the capstone course of a career pathway.

This experience has helped me with my future career by preparing me for the shop work-environment.

"What I like most about my work experience is the people at Reynolds," commented Cole. "All the guys in the shop with me every day just make such a great atmosphere and they are always super knowledgeable and great at showing me how to do new things."

"It’s an exciting time to be in the field of Agriculture Mechanics and Technology," said Christy Kirtley, Reynolds Youth Development Recruiter. "Sharing these opportunities with local students and creating a talent pipeline through local youth is very rewarding for Reynolds. We pair students with mentors, so their time spent is meaningful and productive. Our work-based learning accelerates workplace readiness, develops employable skills, and builds confidence in the students. We encourage all interns to further their education in the mechanical field in programs such as the John Deere Tech Degree offered at Vincennes University for which eligible students can receive tuition reimbursement from Reynolds Farm Equipment."
