Learning Independence, Building Confidence: Transitions Program in Action
Life Skills

Nearly a dozen participants in the Carmel Transitions Program bring their energy and dedication to school kitchens across four different buildings each week. From preparing trays of food and portioning produce to organizing supplies, they take on real tasks that keep schools running smoothly while building the skills they’ll carry into adulthood.

The Transitions Program serves CCS students ages 18–22 and provides real-world experiences that support the move from high school to adult living. Depending on their level of independence, participants may engage in volunteer roles, job training, or paid employment.

The program offers several pathways:

  • Navigators – increased independence based on skill; students may volunteer within Carmel High School or in the community with job coaches.
  • Associates – build skills for transitioning to adult life through volunteer and paid opportunities.
  • Interns - Young adults who build skills for transitioning to adult life through volunteer opportunities within CHS or the community, accompanied by a job coach.
  • Surveyors – young adults, who are accompanied by job coaches in the community as well as transition IA’s on  staff within Carmel High School
  • Seniors – students on a diploma track and may have an IEP; also participate in community volunteer experiences.

Students work closely with job coaches, who provide on-site training, model skills, and step back as independence grows. These experiences prepare participants for future opportunities in restaurants, schools, nursing homes, and beyond.

The Transitions Program helps students gain independence and confidence and enriches the school community with teamwork, purpose, and connection.
