Student Services

The Clay Middle School Student Services Department promotes the academic, social/emotional, and career development of all students. The counseling program is preventive, proactive, and reactive. The school counselors serve as advocates for the students while collaborating with parents, staff, students, and the community to assist students in reaching their full potential.

Both School Counselors and Student Services Coordinators work with students. Although primary roles have been outlined below, involvement with students on an academic and social/emotional level will overlap.

Counselors focus on class placement, academic, career, and social/emotional needs. Examples of primary responsibilities include transitions from elementary and to high school, college & career presentations, scheduling, and social emotional support provided through building wide programming, classroom guidance, small group and one-on-one counseling.

Student services coordinators are licensed social workers who address issues relevant to our middle school population through one-on-one, small group or school wide sessions with students. Areas of focus include school attendance, social/emotional support, bullying and harassment presentations, and assistance with the adjustment to the social setting of the school. Student services coordinators serve as a contact regarding free and reduced lunch and assistance to families with financial need. When appropriate or necessary, school social workers might provide information for outside support services or agencies to help students and families deal with economic, emotional or physical challenges.

Counseling services are offered to all students both individually and in groups. These services are designed to address the academic, social, emotional, and developmental needs of students.

Student services staff coordinates a variety of special programs within their schools. These may include registration, peer helper and conflict mediation programs, long-term educational program planning, and guiding students in their prospective career choices and other decision-making for the future.

An important part of student services is consultation. Staff may consult with parents, faculty, other school staff, and community agencies in order to best meet the individual needs of all students.

Classroom & Small Group Guidance

Student services staff conducts a variety of group guidance lessons throughout the year in order to provide students with information relevant to their needs or concerns. These lessons may include study skills, career exploration, decision-making skills, and future educational planning.

Students may need help during the year with study skills, college and career readiness, or anxiety. Current Clay students and parents will find resources for any of these topics on our Student Services Canvas page.
