Tre Williams wasn’t nervous about working with students; he loves kids. But he had never been an Instructional Assistant before, and this was his first job with Carmel Clay Schools. After five years as an IA, Tre says, “Every day is wonderful. Just some can be louder than others!”
Tre is an Instructional Assistant at Carmel Elementary. We caught up with him between helping students line up for picture day and before heading to lunch duty to assist a special-needs student.
The variety of tasks and responsibilities makes the day go by quickly, according to Tre. He has worked with almost every grade level and fills in as needed throughout the building in various roles.
As a full-time IA, he could leave for home at the end of the day around 2:30. However, Tre also coaches Clay Middle School football. And Clay Middle School wrestling. Oh, and he is the school crossing guard! He says it all works great for his schedule, though, because his four-year-old son attends the Edu-Care (employee daycare) program at Clay Middle School!
Tre was not too keen on being showcased as an exemplary IA. He is reserved and insists he is only successful because of the team in place at Carmel Elementary. With the support of the staff and leadership at Carmel Elementary, Tre is even pursuing his teacher's license to become an elementary teacher.
He remembers when he first started that the principal, Megan Klinginsmith, would say hi to every child by name. He couldn’t believe it was possible to remember that many students. Tre realized he must be working in the right place when he could also say hi to his new friends by name.
We have numerous Instructional Assistant positions across the district, including 3-hour or full-day. IAs are an integral part of our teachers’ and students’ success. Please visit the CCS Human Resources website to learn more about the position or apply.
