Vision Screenings will be September 21st at CWE for 1st, 3rd, and 5th graders.
As your child grows, their eyes can change quickly. Your child’s pediatrician will likely screen your child’s vision as part of their regular checkups. Although both are important, a vision screening and an eye exam are not the same thing.
- A vision screening is an evaluation used to identify the children in need of additional eye care. It can be done by a family doctor, pediatrician, school nurse, or other health care professional.
- A comprehensive eye exam is a thorough exam done by an eye doctor—a specialist called an ophthalmologist or optometrist. The eye doctor can diagnose your child’s medical or vision problem and provide treatment.
Encourage Eye Health:
Eat well, Limit screen time, Get enough sleep, Spend time outdoors, Wear sunglasses, Use protective eyewear, Get regular eye exams
Please email Nurse Andrea if you have questions or opt out of screening.
Body Safety Presentations will take place September 11th - 15th in each individual classroom.
Bullying Presentations will take place September 25th - 29th in combined classrooms by grade level.
To opt out of presentations, please utilize the 2023-2024 Abuse Prevention & Safety Form in PowerSchool. If families opt-out, alternative activities will be available for their children during the presentations.

CALLING ALL LOGOPHILES AND LEXICON LOVERS!
If you are a 4th or 5th grade student with an affinity for orthography, then the College Wood Spell Bowl team is the place for YOU!! Come tryout for the CWE Spell Bowl team and compete against area schools to show that YOU are a CWE Cardinal stellar speller!
Tryouts for the College Wood Spell Bowl team will take place with Mrs. Rohrer in the LGI after school on Wednesday, September 6, from 2:35-3:10 p.m. Students must have a dismissal change entered in school dismissal manager to stay after school for tryouts (select “Spell Bowl” as the exception), AND parents should complete the tryout intention form.
Emails will be sent to families by September 11 with team participant results. Selected team participants will begin practices the week of September 25, with practices taking place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:00-7:35 a.m. until the Spell Bowl competition on November 13. (No practices over Fall Break.)
Please note that while all members of the team will attend the Spell Bowl competition, not all team members will participate in the actual competition. It is a fantastic experience to be a part of the team, and each member’s participation, effort, and commitment throughout the season impacts the whole team’s ultimate growth and success.
Interested 4th and 5th grade students should study the Spell Bowl Word List to prepare for the tryout.
Please email Mrs. Rohrer with any questions. Let the spelling commence!
Room Parents
This popular opportunity is a great way to support your child's specific teacher. Room parents plan and carry out two holiday parties, organize classroom teacher gifts and volunteer during CWE Carnival in March. Due to the high interest in this opportunity, a lottery is held to select the two parents for each classroom.
Interested parents must complete the MTK form by Friday, August 25th. All interested parents will be notified of the lottery results by Friday, September 1st. Everyone selected as a room parent must attend an orientation meeting on Thursday, September 7th from 10 am-11am, following the General PTO meeting.
