Carmel Clay Schools' Employee Wellness Center Receives National Recognition

Carmel Clay Schools’ Employee Wellness Center, alongside their healthcare partner Ascension St. Vincent, received national recognition at the World Health Care Congress Summit for their commitment to improving health outcomes, reducing health care costs and providing innovative health care practices for their employees and families.  Carmel Clay Schools was the only school district in the country to receive this recognition.

The World Health Care Congress is an organization that supports and recognizes a broad range of companies, organizations and health care providers who are transforming healthcare.

The Carmel Clay Schools Wellness Center is available to Carmel Clay Schools’ employees and their families enrolled in the CCS insurance plan. The Wellness Center provides acute, preventative and wellness focused primary care services such as annual physicals, sick visits, lab services, immunizations, and health screenings at no cost to the employee. In addition, the Wellness Center employs two full-time physical therapists, two mental health therapists, a health coach, a registered dietitian and an on-site dispensary for a range of generics drugs. The Wellness Center has expanded to offer fitness classes to include strength training, TRX, Pilates, yoga and spin classes.

Roger McMichael, Associate Superintendent of Business Affairs, was honored to be a guest speaker alongside other workplace and healthcare giants such as Microsoft, Aetna, and John’s Hopkins Hospital. He spoke about the evolution and success of the Carmel Clay Schools Wellness Center on a panel discussion titled, Leverage an Evidence-Based Clinic Strategy to Engage Your Population.

“We began having conversations about the concept of employee wellness at Carmel Clay Schools in 2010 the wellness center became a reality in the spring of 2013.” said McMichael. “Fast forward to 2019 and you will see we are dedicated to focusing not only on employee wellness but on employee well-being, which encompasses our employees’ behavioral/emotional health, social health and even their financial health.”

He added, “Many would be surprised to know that since we’ve launched the CCS Wellness Center we have not had an insurance premium increase in six years and as a result, compared to medical trend, the district saved 5 million dollars in 2017.”
