Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Artificial Intelligence is the theory and method to build machines that think and act like humans.

Generative AI mimics the human brain and generates new text, audio, images, video, or code based on pre-trained content.

The Indiana Department of Education provides the following resource for Indiana families regarding AI.

• Generative AI sometimes makes mistakes, called "hallucinations," that result in inaccurate or made-up information.

• These AI tools often carry the same biases found in the source information.

• Keep the Human in the Loop - always read through, edit, and adjust the output to ensure accuracy.

• Use the AI tool as a brainstorming partner or assistant.

• When prompting AI, ask to “include sources” with the response.

• Avoid including personally identifiable information (PII) when using AI tools.

Currently, there are no AI tools approved in the CCS Trusted Learning Environment (TLE) for student use. Our primary focus is on comprehensive staff training and ethical review to ensure that when we introduce AI to students, it is integrated effectively, safely, and in alignment with our educational goals. We are committed to a thoughtful, phased rollout that prioritizes the best interests and learning outcomes of our students. We anticipate grade level appropriate tools will become available as we learn more about meaningful ways to use artificial intelligence within the classroom. 

• Prompts are inputs provided to an AI chatbot to produce a specific output.

• Prompt engineering is the practice of designing and optimizing these instructions to get the best possible response.

Prompt writing is a craft that takes practice. When writing a prompt, remember the CARE acronym:

• Context - provide background information
• Ask - describe the end product to the chatbot, i.e. email, image, or list
• Rules - tell the chatbot the length, specific criteria, and/or what tone to use
• Example - if available, provide a sample of expected output

Staff are encouraged to participate in our Rev Up AI Canvas Course, which provides best practice training for prompt writing, hallucinations and bias, and ethical use.

"The Artificial Intelligence Playbook" by Hargrave, Fisher, and Frey, leading educational experts, provides resources for professional development materials shared with staff. 

As we expand our use of AI, our training offerings will expand; we want our staff to feel equipped and prepared.

Ethical and appropriate AI use enhances instruction, streamlines operations, and maintains privacy while keeping the educator at the center of the learning environment. Our staff's use of AI is designed to support and reinforce our approved curriculum, ensuring that AI tools align with our vetted educational standards.

Ethical uses include:

• Maintaining data privacy
• Using CCS approved AI tools
• Avoiding use of Personally Identifiable Information (PII)
• Disclosing use of AI
• Reviewing of outputs for bias and accuracy
• Keeping the human in the loop

Appropriate uses include:

• Administrative efficiency
  • Summarizing documents
  • Editing or drafting communication emails
  • Analyzing data, including no personal identifiable information
• Improve accessibility
  • Translating documents for families
  • Generating captions for videos
• Instructional planning aligned with CCS approved curriculum
  • Identifying real-world connections that are aligned with a lesson
  • Adjusting the phrasing of learning intentions and success criteria in student friendly language
  • Generating ideas for integrating concepts and vocabulary from other disciplines
