Users have the ability to create differentiated groups of students in Canvas courses using tags. Teachers can use this feature for various organizational and instructional reasons, including remediation, enrichment, setting accommodations, or support.
Custom differentiation tags can assign targeted assignments, quizzes, or modules to subsets of students, streamline communication to groups, and help with progress monitoring of at-risk students.
- Differentiation tags are hidden from students.
- Students can be given more than one tag.
- Tags can be managed by instructors and changed, edited, or removed at any time.
- Tags are available anywhere the Assign To feature lives.
- Automatic grade passback will NOT work for an assignment that uses a tagged group

Step 1: Create a Tag.
Select Manage Tags.
Select +Tag.

Step 2: Add a student to a tag.
