College Wood Elementary Wins National Mathematics Pentathlon

We are excited to announce College Wood Elementary’s Math Pentathlon Team is the 2023 National Mathematics Pentathlon Team Champions! The team of 59 students from kindergarten to fifth grade averaged an incredible score of more than 12 points per Pentathlete.

Math Participants

“I didn’t really even know I was doing Math. I was just having fun!” exclaimed Jeremiah Bollinger, a CWE kindergarten Hall of Fame winner.

The Math Pentathlon Club at College Wood Elementary is a PTO-sponsored, volunteer-run club. Students learned to play five interactive board games developed by the STEM/STEAM award-winning Mathematics Pentathlon Institute.

Math is where it’s at for these 59 students who learned to win respectfully and lose with grace. During their weekly after-school practices, students not only learned only math and problem-solving skills but resiliency, teamwork, and perseverance.

“All students in the club had to have an adult volunteer their time in some capacity.  Volunteers for the club included parents, grandparents, uncles, and other special people in our Pentathlete’s lives. The club often had 20 or more volunteers every week.” said Erica Veerkamp, CWE PTO President.

This team was able to achieve it all with a lot of hard work and a tremendous amount of CWE community support. Thank you to team coaches Julia Stanco, Debbie Jernigan, and Kelly Doria.
