Update: Middle School Program Change

8/7/2020

Dear CCS Middle School Families,

We wanted to keep you up-to-date with the transition to the Hybrid model of in-person learning. The middle school principals have begun processing the students who changed to Hybrid or Virtual options. Next, they will adjust the schedule and balance both Hybrid and Virtual classes to the highest degree possible. Finally, they will make any needed changes to staffing. These complex steps will be completed by Wednesday, August 12, 2020.

Orientation programs will be held for students in both the Virtual and Hybrid options on Thursday, August 13th, Friday, August 14th, Monday, August 17th and Tuesday, August 18th.  Families may schedule a one-hour time slot on any of these days. Schools will be sending an email to families with details and links to sign up for a day and time for your student’s orientation.

Each student will join a group of 20 students for each orientation session. Please wear face coverings during the orientation and follow social distancing guidelines.

Students will be issued a Chromebook, go through Canvas onboarding, change passwords, and be assigned a Canvas “Bootcamp” assignment to complete at home.

At the same time, school staff will take parents through a tour of the new Canvas template before joining their students to arrange lockers and have time to walk their schedules and become familiar with the building.

Please Note: The schools will offer drive-through hours for parents and students who are not comfortable entering the building.  Staff will distribute Chromebooks, textbooks, instructions for completing the Canvas onboarding, changing passwords, and completing the Canvas “Bootcamp” assignment. Specific times and information about these options will be provided by your school.

The first full day of both Virtual and Hybrid options at each middle school will be Wednesday, August 19th. Carmel High School and all elementary schools will begin on Thursday, August 13, 2020.

We apologize for any inconvenience these changes and delays may cause. Please know that we are doing everything we can to make sure our students are ready to start the school year successfully.

Thanks again for your support and patience in this challenging environment.

Dear Middle School Families,

Our middle school administrative teams have been diligently working around the clock on scheduling and have determined that we cannot balance class sizes to appropriately social distance our in-person program. In order to meet the recommendations of the medical community, we will pivot the middle schools to a hybrid in-person schedule.

Like the Carmel High School model, in the middle school hybrid schedule, our students will be split into two groups based on last name and will attend in-person and virtually on alternating days.

Due to the complexity of the scheduling process, we will not be able to change programs at the end of the nine-week period as originally planned. Students will be committed to their program selection until the end of the fall semester.

If you previously selected the virtual option and wish to change to the hybrid model or previously selected the in-person model and wish to change to the virtual option, please contact your child’s school.  If you do not wish to change your selection, no action is necessary. All changes must be received by noon on Thursday, August 6, 2020. The number of program changes may affect the middle school start day.

This week’s Middle School Orientation programs are canceled and schedules will not be distributed as planned. More information will be forthcoming.

As always, thank you for your patience and support.
