Carmel, IN – Carmel Clay Schools congratulates the 48 Carmel High School students named 2020 National Merit Scholarship Corporation Semifinalists. These outstanding seniors have the opportunity to compete for 7,600 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $31 million.

Dr. Michael Beresford, Superintendent of Carmel Clay Schools congratulated the 48 students on their accomplishment. “What an amazing accomplishment for these students and their families. Students who earn this honor are extremely bright thinkers, but they are also extremely hard workers. These students have put in the hours and hours of work in our most rigorous courses of study to reach this level. I’m extremely proud of the students and their support team of parents, staff, and others who helped them achieve the honor of National Merit Semifinalist.”

Over 1.5 million juniors in 21,000 high school entered the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2019 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. The 16,000 students selected as semifinalists represent less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors. National Merit Finalists will be announced beginning in April.

“We are very proud of our 48 National Merit Semifinalists, they truly embody a tradition of academic pursuit,” said Dr. Tom Harmas, Carmel High School Principal. “Their commitment to their studies is impressive and I know our students are especially thankful for the support, mentorship and guidance they received from their teachers and parents in earning such an outstanding recognition.”

Carmel High School will recognize the 48 National Merit Semifinalists at the CCS School Board Meeting at the Educational Services Center on Monday, October 28th at 7:00 p.m.
